Description
~*~ Hello and Welcome to The Textile Trunk! Please follow us on Instagram @textiletrunk ~*~ We are so incredibly fortunate to have acquired a remarkable collection of beautiful 18th century Portuguese brocade and appliqué panels! (Please visit my store category called “1700s Brocade Appliqué” to see additional pieces in our collection!) Exquisite and rare, these textiles date from approximately 1725-1750. These pieces were found lovingly stored in a convent but are not religious; in the 18th century (and prior), when expensive textiles became unfashionable the aristocracy would often donate pieces such as these to the church as a way of gaining favor with God. Thankfully, due to being so carefully stored, they remained in the state in which they were donated! Due to their bold, large-scale designs, we can deduce that most likely these incredible pieces would have hung in a large, grand (and no doubt opulent!) room. The back of these textiles often have inventory stamps from throughout the years of being stored and cataloged through time. This textile is a remarkable, hand worked combination of Genoa velvet with hand stitched woven brocade designs. The brocade appliqué was backed in paper before being hand stitched in place. They are trimmed in a hemp cording that was first wrapped in a metallic thread that used linen and possibly some silk. It is a remarkable find, ideal for any collector or museum. This textile would also make beautiful wall hangings or decorative table runners, or these could be deconstructed for the fabric – they would incredible made into pieces such as decorative pillows. MEASUREMENTS: This textile measures approximately 21.5 inches wide by 104 inches long CONDITION: This piece has been kept in the original, as found condition, and has not ever been laundered. This textile is over 270 years old and is in remarkable condition for its age. There will be flaws on this textile commensurate with age. This textile has been pieced in a blue fabric (see photos); it's really beautiful! These additions don’t detract from the piece… in fact, they only add to the artistry and impact of this beautiful textile! There is a small amount of damage in places. Some of the brocade and velvet are fragmenting, which is totally and utterly expected for it's age. There may be some voiding in the velvet, some unraveling of the stitching for the applique, and/or some marks on the back where it once hung on a cold stone wall. Please note the importance of viewing the photographs carefully (and using the zoom feature) to view the condition of each piece in detail, as that is the best guide to be sure it’s right for your project or use. It’s in good condition for its age but is not without the signs of time and use. Please do feel free to email me with any questions about a specific piece; we are always here to help and are happy to answer questions! inv #: P26
